Indian Costume
One of the first things to come to mind with an Indian costume is a colourful huge headdress. It is easy to imagine all the comments your child might get if dressed up in a costume of an Indian complete with a mighty headdress. With such an impressive indian headdress, your little boy or girl can pretend that they are the leader of the clan. Or, if you choose not to go with a huge headdress, you can always choose a feather headband instead, which are also great and normally very colourful too.
For boys, there are normally many requests for their costume to include Indian warrior weapons, such as spears of bows and arrows, whereas girls tend to be happy with their Indian costume containing a plaited wig or decorative jewellery. Many girls who request to dress up as a Red Indian want to have a costume because they admire the Disney Indian princess, Pocahontas or have seen Tiger Lily from Peter Pan.

No one can blame them for desiring to have such a costume for Indian dress, although seemingly simple can look rather elaborate and both admired princesses; Pocahontas and Tiger Lily are beautiful. Many of the costumes styled to be Indian like include the iconic ankle boots that are always associated with Indians and are also VERY comfy.
To help really get into the swing of things when dressed up as an Indian, you should try and include a few hand held implements with your child’s costume.
Such implements may include certain toy weapons, which are obviously harmless in real life so there is no need to be concerned, although, whenever purchasing any kind of toy weapon for a child, it should always be supervised by an adult.
Most children, who have seen any kind of cowboys and Indians film will have an idea of how an Indian should look, sound and behave. In this way, parents should be prepared for some loud levels of noise but I firmly believe that one should always embrace the noise, for your child will not want to behave this way forever and dressing up in an Indian costume may soon be something they want to avoid instead of embrace.
So make sure that you take lots and lots of photos of your own Red Indian in his or her costume whilst you can, you will definately be able to look back on them fondly.
Jewellery is often a large factor when wearing a fancy dress costume and no more so then when dressed up in Indian fancy dress. Your child may find that they want to have lots of wooden bracelets or plaited jewels into their hairs or in many cases, children will ask for an Indian choker necklace. These seem to be a popular choice because they can be worn by both boys and girls.
If part of the desire for your child to dress up in a costume to resemble an Indian stems from the fact that they want to beat on some drums as many films depict Indians clans doing, then this is easily sorted. There are often drums and/ or bongos sold as accessories to Indian costumes, which are such a great amount of fun that this should be a serious purchase option!
When choosing a fancy dress costume, if you come across the Indian themes, it can be extremely fun to make up Indian names too. This will really make the entire experience of wearing such a costume fun for your child, or “Running Bull / Running Brook” as he or she is now known. It is also a great time for you to get involved in your child’s play time too, for there is nothing stopping you adopting your very own Indian name as well!
